CLINICAL MASSAGE THERAPY is the application of massage techniques that enhances current treatment of soft tissue pain, over use injuries, biomechanically stressed areas or any musculoskeletal disorders. A combination of techniques include but not limited to myofascial release, trigger point therapy, soft tissue mobilization.
Myofascial Release – This technique is used more and more by practitioners to reduce pain, increase comfortable movement and improve posture. It works with the connective tissue that spreads throughout your body and ties it together. This technique is hands-on involving the application of stretches & pressure to the fascia and muscles to relieve tension & pain. Myofasial release can reduce chronic pain, chronic headaches, plantar fascities, stiff neck, low back pain, shoulder problems, the effects of fibromyalgia, arthritis and TMJD. Athletes benefit because Myofasical Release can help repair old injuries by increasing the pliability of scar tissue in muscles & tendons and improves flexibility, breathing, balance and relaxation.
Trigger Point Therapy – A trigger point is a hyper-irritable “spot” that develop in muscles, tendons, and surrounding fasica that can refer pain into other parts of the body due to the connection of the nervous system. These trigger points are created by muscles that are over utilized causing hypertonicity, or binding of other muscles. These areas cause other muscles/tendons to work in a different fashion causing pain in different parts of the body. Trigger points are also created by muscles that do no contract often causing ischemic response. Ischemic is lack of oxygen that is carried by the blood because no movement means no blood circulation, meaning lack of oxygen to the tissue which then becomes dehydrated and tight. Trigger points are caused by faulty muscle recruiting patterns, altered postural movements, muscle imbalances or nerve root compression. Pressure is applied to the area of the triggers and sustained until the pain dissipates (10 sec – 1 minute). Increased blood flow & oxygen then makes the tissue more pliable and flexible and pain. Trigger point therapy can be combined with myofascial release. Trigger point therapy is not the same as Acupressure. Acupressure are points throughout the body mapped out in a way that stimulate the meridians of the body.
Soft tissue mobilization – Joints are moved passively to stimulate blood flow and increase circulation throughout the joint to decrease pain and increase flexibility to allow the muscles and tendons to work more efficiently. This is used after myofascial release or trigger point therapy to decrease joint restriction.
WELLNESS MASSAGE THERAPY is used to describe massage techniques to help you unwind, relax and to escape from everyday stress. Swedish & Deep tissue are techniques used throughout your entire body to increase blood circulation, loosen up tight muscles, and experience a true relaxing session.
